Activities in Ketambe
There are only a few places left on earth where you can still find populations of wild orangutans. Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the places in Sumatra. Close to Gunung Leuser National Park you can find a small village called Ketambe. Ketambe is the best place in Indonesia to start jungle trekking and see orangutans and other wildlife, such as gibbons, thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, wild boars, snakes and hornbills.
we work with local guides, born and raised in Ketambe. By working with local guides, we stimulate local income and support families in the village. Our guide team can explain you everything about the area around Ketambe, they all love jungle and have lots of experience.
In Ketambe you can also visit waterfalls, do white water rafting or tubing on the Alas River or take Indonesian cooking courses. For sure you will have fun and have fun.
Forest Trekking
We offer 1 day trekking and multiple day trekking, up to 1 or 2 months. Jungle trekking can be arranged by us at ketambe. When you book with us, we provide guides, porters, permits, all food and drink in the jungle, bedding (tents, air mattresses and sleeping bags) and leech socks. Seeing orangutans and other wildlife, while exploring the forest is the main goal during trekking. During jungle trekking you will walk about 5 or 6 hours per day,
1 day trip
You will start from the guesthouse after breakfast. After a short walk along the road, you will enter the rainforest. lunch hour you will rest along the river bank. You will enjoy local lunch and swim in the fresh and clear river water. In the afternoon you will return to the guesthouse
Multiple day track
When you choose to do trekking for more days, a porter is required. At your own preference, you can decide the running time during the day. You go deeper into the forest and there is enough time to see orangutans and other wildlife. On the first day you will stay at the view place next to the river. On the next day you have to cross a river and you will continue your journey until next to a hot spring. You can take bath there, you will enjoy it. The porter will cook a nice traditional dinner for you. The program for the following days will depend on your own interests. Of course you are looking for orangutans and other animals. But if you want to relax it's possible to stay longer in the hot springs. The trip also includes a visit to a beautiful waterfall.
Rafting
If you want to do something different and more adventurous, you can decide to do white water rafting on the Alas River. In the rainy season (March/April and September to November) the river will be heavy. All necessary equipment will be available. If you just want to do 'river riding' you can ask us to join. You can drive easily on the alas river.
Cooking Lesson
with us in our cooking lessons to learn the secrets of Alas Culinary and Indonesian cuisine. Cooking lessons will be given by Ghandy Jungle Ketambe. Ghandy will show you the traditional cooking style that is still used in homes in Ketambe. After preparing a delicious meal, you can enjoy your meal the local way!
